This article will discuss the basic steps on how you can compute your electricity bill using simple formulas in excel.

The following are the basic steps on how you can compute for your estimated monthly electric bill.

Identify all types of significant electrical loads at home and list them down in one column in excel. An electrical load is a device that consumes electricity.

Note: I have excluded phones and other gadgets because they only consume a small amount of Power

Count how many are these loads inside your home and place them in the following column which we are going to label as Quantity or Qty. You will now have a table looking like this.

Identify what is the rating in watts for each of the appliances and place them in the column next to the quantity and we will label this column as Watt Rating. If you have no idea what is the rating of your appliances, you can look for these ratings in the body of each appliance.

Evaluate how many hours per day does each load run inside your home. We will place them in a column titled Hours Usage. For these example I will be using the hours usage shown in the table.

Compute for the daily watt-hour usage by multiplying Watt Rating to Hours usage. And sum the individual watt-hour. We have now arrived at our daily estimated Watt-hour consumption.

Compute for the monthly Watt-hour usage by multiplying the daily Watt-hour to 30 (Watt-Hour x 30).

Compute for the estimated monthly Kilowatt-Hour usage by dividing the Watt-hour by 1000 [(Watt-hour x 30)/1000]. We now have the estimated total monthly Kilowatt-hour usage.

Compute for the estimated electricity bill by multiplying your Monthly Kilowatt-hour usage to the average pesos per kilowatt-hour from your utility provider. And in this example, we will use 13 pesos as our Php/kWhr.

Finally, on this example, this Philippine household consumes 661.98 kW-hr per month which is equivalent to 8,605.74 pesos.

And if you have more appliances at home, you can just simply add more rows and the process of arriving at your estimated electric bill is the same to what was discussed on items 2 to 8.

So how can the estimated electricity bill help you? The bill amount, though an estimate, can help you manage your finances if you are creating a family budget. Having this insight can help you identify which appliances at home you should reduce in usage if you want to lower your monthly expenses.
